Not all those who wander are lost

Edinburgh’s relationship with literature is passionate and very much public – if I was in my yoof I would be sniggering at it PDA-ing all over the place. Step off the train and there are extracts of Sir Walter Scott’s writings all over Waverley station; visit the Scottish Parliament and there are many quotations inscribed on the Canongate Wall or go for a pint in Bannermans and on the way back down the Canongate be greeted by a neon sign of a J.R.R. Tolkien quote. Seriously, get a room.

“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.”

J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

The Edinburgh Book Festival is on now until 29 August 2016
